The preface is centered around two sections; the first one is about the idiomatic and linguistic meaning of the place and the most prominent views and definitions pertaining to it ; it also shows the importance of the place in literature in general, and in poetry in particular. Its importance is concerned with the personal experience in the place where it is located and the influence it has on the man of letter. The second section is about the fatimiya age; it functions as an introduction to the social and literary life of the poet, then showing the poet’s importance in the literaryfields in the past and nowadays, ashe was able to top the list of poets of his time. It also shows the relationship between the poet and his place in order to deal with this point in three chapters .
The first chapter is entitled” the natural and the artificilal place”. It deals with two sections. The first one is about the natural place, the place, the place of liberty and embarking that the poet deslt with . the attempted to clarify the meaning of earthy place like (mountain, earth, and garden ) ; and the heavenly place taken by the poet as a symbol expressing his subjective aspirations.
The second section is about the artificial place in which the poet attempts to show the extent of the intellectual expansion; and the role of the social and cultural life in changing the relationship between man and his place, and the extent of
influencing the new place which has a civilized nature. We dealt
with it according to two sides: the personal place like ( houses and palaces), and the public places like ( churches, orchards , and clubs and the places of direct and indirect recruitment). The second chapter is entitled ” the poet’s attitude towards the place “. it expresses the poet’s pychological state concerning the place wher he is . it falls into three sections. The first one is about strangeness and exile as he suffered from exile due to the fact that he he was exiled from his country. His poetry is pregnant with passion and love for his country. Due to the fact of depriving him from being the heir to his father , the caliphate he suffered from the feeling of pychological exile even within his own country ; poetry was a getaway for that feeling . As for the second section, it is about intimacy and enmity in which the poet’s viewpoint towards the place( city, garden, and graves) is seen in two ways; one positive, the other negative.
The spatial symbol has its share in the third section as the symbol is one of the tools used by the poet in order not to reveal the intented place; he used woman as a symbol for the country and caliphate; and the debris as a symbol for the happy past where the beloved and family are there in the place he deserted; and other place are used metaphorically.
The last chapter ( the image of the place) com to provide us with a final viwpoint concerning the relation between the poet and the place according to an artistic approaches which helps in taking the spatial experiment from the state of stagnation to that of vitality and mobility by using simile, metaphor, and metonymy.the thes is finalized with a list of bibliography and findings.
